Not because it makes a special effort. But because it simply is by nature and by character a town that welcomes dogs as a matter of course. The cafés, the pubs, the independent shops, the walking routes, the enclosed garden at Blackbird Cottage all of it fits together to create a genuinely effortless dog-friendly experience.

The cottage — what to expect

Blackbird Cottage welcomes one well-behaved dog per stay with a £30 supplement.

The enclosed private garden is fully secured your dog can roam freely and safely from the moment you arrive, while you unload the car and settle in. There is an outdoor tap on the back of the cottage for rinsing muddy paws before coming inside. A dog bowl is provided in the kitchen. Please bring your dog’s own bed or blanket.

The garden has a small wildlife pond please keep an eye on your dog around it.

A few house rules worth knowing: dogs are welcome but please use the throws provided on furniture and do not leave them alone in the cottage unsupervised. We also ask that dogs are not allow in the bedrooms white sheets and muddy paws just don’t mix.

Dog-friendly walks from the cottage door

The West Dorset countryside starts almost from the front door and it is exceptional dog walking country.

Puckett’s Wood is a short walk from the cottage a beautiful ancient Woodland Trust woodland that is spectacular in spring bluebell season and wonderful in every season. Head west from the market square past St Mary’s Church and follow the footpaths up toward Gerrard’s Hill.

The River Brit to Netherbury is a three-mile circular walk along the wooded banks of the River Brit south to the pretty village of Netherbury and back. Flat, easy and perfect for dogs who love a paddle in a river.

The Stoke Abbott circular is a more challenging 5.5-mile walk via the Wessex Ridgeway wonderful open countryside, deep wooded valleys and long views across West Dorset.

Winyard’s Gap, about 15 minutes north of Beaminster, offers one of the most spectacular dog walks in West Dorset an open ridge with views across four counties and a beautiful woodland circuit through ancient beech and oak. Spring is magical — Puckett’s Wood is at its most spectacular during bluebell season in late April and early May. Watch for adders in warm weather on heathland and bracken.

Eype Beach welcomes dogs all year round, off the lead. And it is, without question, our most recommended beach from the cottage.

A beautiful stretch of shingle and pebble tucked beneath dramatic golden cliffs, Eype is one of West Dorset’s most unspoilt and least crowded beaches. It is a favourite with local dog owners — dogs are welcome on the beach year-round and can explore the beach off the lead. The water is clean and clear, the cliffs are spectacular and the beach feels genuinely wild in a way that the more popular Dorset beaches rarely do.

From Eype, you can walk along the South West Coast Path towards West Bay in one direction, or towards Seatown and Golden Cap in the other. Both are outstanding dog walks with dramatic cliff scenery throughout.

There are no facilities on the beach itself — no café, no toilets — so bring water for your dog and everything you need for the day. The dog-friendly New Inn pub, run by Palmer’s Brewery in Bridport, is an easy walk from the beach.

Insider tip: Access is via a narrow single-track lane and the car park is small, so get there early to bag a spot in high season.

Charmouth — east beach · 35 minutes from Blackbird Cottage

Charmouth East Beach — on the Bridport side of the River Char — welcomes dogs off the lead at any time of the year.

Charmouth is one of the finest fossil hunting beaches on the entire Jurassic Coast — and the east beach is the dog-friendly section, with no restrictions at any time of year. The shingle and sand beach stretches away from the river mouth toward Golden Cap, with spectacular cliff scenery and some of the richest fossil beds on the coastline.

The beach is a magnet for fossil hunters and you can get tips on how to find them and see some of the area’s most impressive finds at the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre. A dog who digs enthusiastically is an unexpected advantage here.

The Beach Shop and Café at Charmouth is dog-friendly and perfect for a post-walk coffee. The Heritage Coast Centre is well worth a visit before or after your walk.

Note on the west beach: Charmouth West Beach — on the Lyme Regis side of the River Char — welcomes dogs off the lead from 1 October to 30 April only. Dogs are not permitted from 1 May to 30 September. Stick to the east beach for year-round access.

Cogden beach · 25 minutes from Blackbird Cottage

Cogden is a sand and shingle beach near Bridport owned by the National Trust. Dogs are allowed all year round.

Cogden is a quieter and less well-known alternative to the more popular Hive Beach next door a wilder stretch of shingle with open views and a quieter setting than some of Dorset’s resort beaches. Dogs are welcome all year, making it a handy choice during the summer months when many better-known beaches have restrictions.

There are no facilities at the beach itself — no café, no toilets — but the National Trust car park is close and the Hive Beach Café at Burton Bradstock is a short walk away.

West Bexington beach · 30 minutes from Blackbird Cottage

Bexington Beach allows dogs all year round in the designated area

A quiet, undeveloped shingle beach at the western end of Chesil Beach — wild, peaceful and wonderful for a long dog walk along the back of the shingle ridge with Portland Bill visible in the distance on a clear day. The South West Coast Path runs along the top of the beach heading east toward Burton Bradstock and west toward Abbotsbury.

Outside the summer season, Seatown is one of the most magical dog beaches in West Dorset. A tiny, beautiful shingle cove at the foot of Golden Cap — the highest point on the entire south coast of England at 191 metres — with The Anchor Inn sitting almost on the beach and the South West Coast Path climbing steeply above.

From Seatown, the climb up Golden Cap is one of the best dog-friendly clifftop walks in southern England. The views from the top — stretching from Portland Bill in the east to Start Point in Devon on a clear day — are simply extraordinary.

West Bay — the harbour town familiar to anyone who has watched ITV’s Broadchurch — is at its best for dog walkers from October to April, when the full beach opens up and the crowds thin considerably. The iconic golden sandstone cliffs are spectacular at any time of year and the South West Coast Path leads in both directions along some of the finest coastal scenery in England.

In summer, the port area on a lead is still a pleasant option — and Eype Beach, just a short drive away, is the obvious alternative for off-lead summer beach time.

Hive Beach, Burton Bradstock · 25 minutes from Blackbird Cottage

Dogs are welcome all year at the dog-friendly area of Burton Bradstock Beach heading east towards Cogden Beach, past the wooden chalet. No dogs on the main beach from 1 June to 30 September.

Hive Beach is one of the most celebrated beaches on the Jurassic Coast — a gorgeous sweep of golden pebbles beneath towering amber sandstone cliffs, with the renowned Hive Beach Café right on the shoreline. The Hive Beach Café is dog-friendly with outdoor seating and water bowls always available.

In summer, head east past the wooden chalet for the dog-friendly stretch — it is quieter than the main beach and often has the most spectacular views back toward the cliffs. In autumn and winter the entire beach opens up and it is extraordinary.

A note on Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is the most popular town on this stretch of the Jurassic Coast and the beach rules are worth knowing before you go.

Monmouth Beach and Church Cliff Beach in Lyme Regis welcome dogs all year round. The Lyme Regis front beach allows dogs from 1 October to 30 April — dogs must be kept on a lead at this time.

For summer visits with a dog, Monmouth Beach at the western end of the town is your best option — a quiet pebble beach beyond the Cobb that is always dog-friendly and a lovely spot for a quieter, less crowded visit to Lyme.

Beach 1 — Eype Beach

One of West Dorset’s most beautiful and least crowded beaches and the one we recommend most to guests at Blackbird Cottage. A wide stretch of pebble beach tucked beneath dramatic golden cliffs, with far-reaching views along Lyme Bay in both directions.

Dogs are welcome off the lead all year round and the beach is wonderful for a proper run, wide open, uncrowded and backed by the kind of wild, spectacular scenery that makes Dorset so extraordinary. The water is clean and clear and most dogs who visit leave considerably wetter than they arrived.

The coastal path above Eype leads east toward West Bay and west toward Seatown, both spectacular stretches of walking that your dog will adore. The clifftop views are some of the finest on the entire Jurassic Coast.

Seatown is a beautiful shingle cove at the foot of the cliffs, the kind of place that feels like a genuine discovery even when you’ve been there a dozen times. Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of England at 191 metres, rises dramatically behind the village and the coastal path leads up and over it in both directions.

Dogs are welcome on the beach all year round and the walk from Seatown up to the top of Golden Cap is one of the finest dog walks on the entire Jurassic Coast, steep in places but utterly spectacular.

The beach itself is quieter than most but does have a car park. Your dog will have the run of the shingle beach to themselves for much of the year.

Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock is one of the Jurassic Coast’s most beloved National Trust beaches a stunning sweep of golden pebbles beneath towering amber cliffs, with crystal-clear water and beautiful light.

Dogs are welcome on the pebble beach all year round, and the wide stretch west of the café is perfect for an off-lead run along the shoreline. For a spectacular Jurassic Coast walk, follow the beach east towards Portland before returning along the cliff path for sweeping coastal views.

Afterwards: The Hive Beach Café is renowned across West Dorset for its local seafood and its genuine welcome for dogs with outdoor seating, water bowls always available and the most spectacular sea views as a backdrop.

West Bay the pretty harbour town you may recognise as the setting for ITV’s Broadchurch, is one of the most dramatic spots on the entire Jurassic Coast. The iconic golden sandstone cliffs rise to 50 metres above the eastern end of the beach, and the harbour is one of the most photographed in Dorset.

The western beach stretch at West Bay welcomes dogs all year round and is a popular, sociable spot for dog walkers. Head along the esplanade westwards from the harbour and you’ll find a long stretch of sand and shingle where dogs can play freely regardless of the season usually with plenty of potential canine playmates for sociable dogs.

From West Bay the coastal path leads east toward Eype and west toward Burton Bradstock — both excellent dog walks with spectacular cliff scenery throughout.

Dogs are welcome all year round on the western end of the beach, away from the main bathing area, and the beach is particularly wonderful outside the summer season when the whole stretch opens up. Fossil hunting with a dog is one of those activities that sounds impractical and turns out to be completely wonderful, your dog will dig enthusiastically while you scan the shingle for ammonites.

The coastal path from Charmouth leads west toward Lyme Regis a spectacular clifftop walk and east toward Seatown and Golden Cap.

Seasonal restrictions apply on specific stretches of many Dorset beaches between 1st May and 30th September. All five beaches above have dog-friendly sections available throughout the year but always check the latest local guidance before you go, as policies can change.

Fresh water is not always available on the beach itself always carry water for your dog, especially on warmer days and longer walks.

The Jurassic Coast coastal path can be steep and exposed in places. Keep your dog on a short lead near cliff edges the drops can be dramatic and the ground unstable in places.

WALK 1 — Beaminster to Netherbury along the River Brit

Distance: Approx. 3 miles circular
Difficulty: Easy flat and well-marked
Pub stop: The Red Lion, Beaminster

This is the perfect introduction to Beaminster’s walking country and one of the most beautiful short walks in West Dorset.

From the cottage, pick up the Brit Valley Way along Church Street and head down St Mary Well Street to join the wooded banks of the River Brit.

The path follows the river south through a pastoral landscape of orchards, wildflower meadows and quiet water meadows the kind of countryside that feels unchanged for centuries.

After about 1.5 miles, the path reaches Netherbury, with its handsome church, ancient cottages and original location. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall “River Cottage”.

From here, follow the river back into Beaminster along the Brit Valley Way.

Your dog will adore the river it’s perfect paddling depth for confident water-loving dogs and the meadows are wide and spacious for a proper run.

Turn right at the bottom of Shadrack Street, and follow the footpaths through lanes and a field up towards Gerrard’s Hill. The climb is steep in places but worth every step there are lovely views back over Beaminster as you ascend, with the church clock chiming softly below.

The woodland is at its most magical in spring when the bluebell season arrives, but it’s a wonderful dog walk in every season shaded and cool in summer, carpeted in leaves in autumn and wonderfully atmospheric on a crisp winter morning.

Your dog can explore off-lead through the woodland, though keep them on leads where livestock especially donkeys are present.

Afterwards: Return to the cottage and stroll to The Trading Post Café on Hogshill Street for a well-earned veggie breakfast or lunch a much-loved Beaminster institution and entirely dog-friendly.

Getting started: Head west from the cottage and follow the Wessex Ridgeway signs.

WALK 3 — Beaminster, Stoke Abbott and back

Distance: Approx. 5.5 miles circular
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging hilly with wonderful views
Pub stop: The New Inn, Stoke Abbott

This is the walk to do when you want to feel like you’ve earned your lunch.

From Beaminster, the route follows the Wessex Ridgeway up to Gerrard’s Hill before descending into the charming village of Stoke Abbott a classic West Dorset village with a medieval church, pretty cottages and one of the finest thatched country pubs in the area.

The countryside along the way is extraordinary: open ridgeway, deep wooded valleys and views stretching out across West Dorset that stop you mid-stride.

The return to Beaminster via Netherbury follows the River Brit along a beautiful stretch of the Brit Valley Way a lovely, varied route that means you’re never walking the same path twice.

Dogs should be kept on leads where livestock is present, but there are long stretches of open path where they can run freely.

Afterwards: The New Inn at Stoke Abbott is a handsome 17th century freehouse with a spacious garden & dog-friendly, welcoming and very good for lunch. (It is best to book a table) Worth the climb to get there.

Getting started: From the market square follow Church Street and pick up the Wessex Ridgeway heading north and west.

WALK 4 — Winyard's Gap and Chedington Woods

Distance: Approx. 3–4 miles circular from the pub
Difficulty: Easy to moderate — woodland paths with some open ridge
Pub stop: Winyard’s Gap Inn, Chedington (short drive from Beaminster)

This one requires a short drive Winyard’s Gap is about 15 minutes north of Beaminster in the village of Chedington but it’s well worth it for one of the most spectacular dog walks in West Dorset.

Winyard’s Gap offers sweeping views across four counties, stretching over the Parrett Valley and beyond on clear days.

The views from the ridge are extraordinary and the woodland itself is the kind of place where dogs disappear happily into the undergrowth and emerge looking very pleased with themselves.

Afterwards: Winyard’s Gap Inn is one of the most dog-friendly pubs in Dorset water bowls and treats at the door, dogs welcome throughout the bar, hearty seasonal food and local ales. A proper reward for dog and owner alike.

Getting started: Drive north from Beaminster toward Chedington (postcode DT8 3HY). Park at the inn and pick up the footpath from there.

WALK 5 — Eype Beach and the South West Coastal Path

Distance: Approx. 3–5 miles depending on route
Difficulty: Moderate coastal path with some steep sections
Pub / Café stop: The New Inn, Eype (or West Bay options nearby)

For the full West Dorset dog walking experience, Eype Beach is an absolute must and it’s only about 20 minutes from Blackbird Cottage by car and dog friendly year round.

Eype is one of West Dorset’s most beautiful and least crowded beaches a quiet pebble cove backed by dramatic golden cliffs where dogs can enjoy off-lead freedom all year round.

From the beach, the South West Coast Path leads east toward West Bay through some of the finest coastal scenery in England golden sandstone cliffs, sweeping sea views and the kind of fresh air that makes everyone feel considerably better about everything.

The clifftop path above Eype gives views back toward Golden Cap the highest point on the south coast of England and the walk is spectacular in every season.

Afterwards: The New Inn at Eype is a friendly, traditional Dorset pub with a lovely terraced garden and panoramic views dog-friendly and perfect for a proper lunch before the drive back. Or head into West Bay where there are several dog-friendly cafés and pubs along the harbour.

Getting started: Drive south from Beaminster toward Bridport and follow signs for Eype. Park at the Eype Mouth car park (postcode DT6 6AP).

A few practical notes for dog walkers

All five walks include sections through farmland always keep your dog on a lead where livestock is present and follow the Countryside Code.

There is an outdoor tap at the cottage for rinsing muddy paws.

Most of Beaminster’s cafés, pubs and restaurants are dog-friendly so your companion can join you for coffee at Cilla & Camilla, a pub evening at The Red Lion or lunch in town. The only place that you can’t take your dog is Brassica although you can sit outside on the square in the warmer months.

Always carry water for your dog, especially on longer walks in summer.
