The cottage — what to expect
Blackbird Cottage welcomes one well-behaved dog per stay with a £30 supplement.
The enclosed private garden is fully secured your dog can roam freely and safely from the moment you arrive, while you unload the car and settle in. There is an outdoor tap on the back of the cottage for rinsing muddy paws before coming inside. A dog bowl is provided in the kitchen. Please bring your dog’s own bed or blanket.
The garden has a small wildlife pond please keep an eye on your dog around it.
A few house rules worth knowing: dogs are welcome but please use the throws provided on furniture and do not leave them alone in the cottage unsupervised. We also ask that dogs are not allow in the bedrooms white sheets and muddy paws just don’t mix.
Dog-friendly walks from the cottage door
The West Dorset countryside starts almost from the front door and it is exceptional dog walking country.
Puckett’s Wood is a short walk from the cottage a beautiful ancient Woodland Trust woodland that is spectacular in spring bluebell season and wonderful in every season. Head west from the market square past St Mary’s Church and follow the footpaths up toward Gerrard’s Hill.
The River Brit to Netherbury is a three-mile circular walk along the wooded banks of the River Brit south to the pretty village of Netherbury and back. Flat, easy and perfect for dogs who love a paddle in a river.
The Stoke Abbott circular is a more challenging 5.5-mile walk via the Wessex Ridgeway wonderful open countryside, deep wooded valleys and long views across West Dorset.
Winyard’s Gap, about 15 minutes north of Beaminster, offers one of the most spectacular dog walks in West Dorset an open ridge with views across four counties and a beautiful woodland circuit through ancient beech and oak. Dog-friendly beaches within 35 minutes
Five of the finest dog-friendly beaches on the Jurassic Coast are within a short drive of Blackbird Cottage:
Eype Beach (20 minutes) — dogs welcome all year, off the lead. Wild, beautiful and uncrowded. Our most recommended beach from the cottage. Park at Eype Mouth car park, DT6 6AP.
Charmouth East Beach (35 minutes) — dogs welcome all year, off the lead. One of the finest fossil hunting beaches on the Jurassic Coast. Park at the foreshore car park, DT6 6LD.
Cogden Beach (25 minutes) — dogs welcome all year. A quieter, wilder stretch of shingle near Burton Bradstock. National Trust car park, DT6 4RG.
Seatown (25 minutes) — dogs welcome 1 October to 30 April. Spectacular setting beneath Golden Cap. The Anchor Inn is right on the beach. Park at DT6 6JU, £5 per car.
Hive Beach, Burton Bradstock (25 minutes) — dogs welcome all year in the section east of the café toward Cogden. No dogs on the main beach 1 June to 30 September. The Hive Beach Café is dog-friendly. Park at DT6 4RF.

One of the great pleasures of Beaminster for dog owners is that your companion can join you almost everywhere.
Cilla & Camilla on the market square welcomes dogs in their sunny courtyard and inside, perfect for breakfast or lunch. The Trading Post on Hogshill Street is dog-friendly and makes the finest Dorset Apple Cake in the town. The Red Lion on the square welcomes dogs throughout a proper pub with real ales and live music on some nights. CJ Pets on the market square is a wonderful independent pet shop stocking food, treats, toys and accessories everything you might have forgotten to pack and quite possibly the most popular shop in town with four-legged visitors. The Co-op on the square is open daily 7am to 10pm and stocks a small range of dog food for emergencies. Larger supermarkets are available in Bridport (7 miles) and Crewkerne (10 miles).

Seasonal tips for dog owners
Spring is magical — Puckett’s Wood is at its most spectacular during bluebell season in late April and early May. Watch for adders in warm weather on heathland and bracken.
Summer beach access is the main consideration — several Dorset beaches restrict dogs between May and September. Eype Beach and Charmouth East Beach are both open all year and are your best summer beach options. Carry water for your dog on longer coastal walks in warm weather.
Autumn is excellent for dog owners — the seasonal restrictions lift on 1 October across most Dorset beaches, opening up Seatown, West Bay and the main Hive Beach section. The countryside is extraordinary in autumn colour. The log burner at the cottage is the perfect reward at the end of a long day out.
Winter is wonderful — the beaches and countryside are quiet, the walking is superb and the cottage is warm and welcoming throughout. Check weather forecasts before coastal walks as cliff paths can be slippery after heavy rain.
A note on ticks — West Dorset’s countryside comes with ticks, particularly in long grass, bracken and woodland from spring through autumn. Check your dog thoroughly after every walk.
