Brassica is the cornerstone of Beaminster’s food scene and one of the finest restaurants in West Dorset. Founded in 2014 by Cass Titcombe, who co-founded the celebrated Canteen restaurants in London, and Louise Chidgey, Brassica has built a devoted following for its outstanding modern British and European cuisine, beautifully crafted from the finest seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.

The menu changes regularly to reflect what’s at its best and everything is cooked with a confidence and precision that belies the relaxed, unhurried atmosphere of the dining room. Equally good for a leisurely breakfast, a long lunch or a special dinner. One of our most recommended tables and just a two-minute stroll from the cottage.

THE TRADING POST · 3 Hogshill Street, Beaminster DT8 3AE

A much-loved Beaminster institution tucked just off the market square. The Trading Post is a wonderful vegetarian café where everything is freshly cooked with real care the soufflé and the Dorset Apple Cake have their own devoted following, and the breakfasts and inventive lunch dishes are consistently excellent.

Open Tuesday to Saturday. Well worth timing your morning around.

CILLA & CAMILLA · 22 The Square, Beaminster DT8 3AS

Part café, part gift shop and wholly wonderful. Cilla & Camilla has been a fixture of Beaminster’s market square since 2011, offering a warm welcome, excellent breakfasts and lunches, beautiful homemade cakes and a carefully chosen range of gifts and homeware.

The sunny courtyard is one of the best spots in Beaminster on a warm morning a coffee, a cake and absolutely nowhere to be. Dogs are welcome too.

THE OLLEROD — BAR, LOUNGE & POP-UPS · 3 Prout Bridge, Beaminster DT8 3AYe

The Ollerod has been one of Beaminster’s most celebrated dining destinations for years a beautiful 14th century restaurant with rooms, formerly home to the three AA Rosette kitchen of chef Chris Staines. In early 2026, The Ollerod reinvented itself in an exciting new direction.

The kitchen has closed, but the beautiful bar and lounge with its open fire, walled garden and terrace remains open seven days a week. In its place, The Ollerod now hosts a rolling programme of food pop-ups, food trucks and garden BBQ takeovers on certain evenings, alongside their own carefully curated bar snack menu.

The result is something genuinely exciting a brilliant bar in a beautiful setting, with a constantly changing line-up of guest chefs, food trucks and events that make every visit different.

PARNHAM PARK RESTAURANT · Parnham Park, Beaminster DT8 3LZ

For the most extraordinary dining experience near Beaminster, Parnham Park Restaurant is in a class of its own.

Set within a stunning 140-acre estate, just a short drive — or beautiful countryside walk — from Blackbird Cottage, Parnham is one of the best places to eat in Beaminster. Listed in the Michelin Guide, it has quickly become one of Dorset’s most talked-about restaurants.

Seasonal sharing plates are served in a beautiful walled garden dining room and glasshouse, with menus inspired by the finest local and seasonal ingredients.

This is a restaurant to dress up for — or, at the very least, plan ahead for. The setting, food and experience are exceptional. A Sunday lunch walk from the cottage to Parnham and back is one of our favourite recommendations for guests. Just remember to book well in advance.

THE RED LION · The Square, Beaminster DT8 3AS

An 18th century coaching inn right on the market square and one of Beaminster’s most welcoming pubs. The Red Lion is a proper, unpretentious local — good food, real ales, a warm welcome and live music on some nights. Five minutes on foot from the cottage and the ideal spot for a relaxed evening when nobody wants to think about where to go.

Dogs are welcome. No booking required. Just turn up.

A perfect afternoon tea in Dorset

There’s something undeniably special about a traditional afternoon tea — the slow pace, the elegance, and of course, the indulgent treats. During a recent stay at Blackbird Cottage in Beaminster, we found ourselves craving just that. The only catch? It was a Monday, a day when many tea rooms and hotels tend to close.

After a bit of online searching, we discovered that Summer Lodge, a beautiful English country house hotel in the pretty village of Evershot, was not only open but served an afternoon tea. It turned out to be the perfect choice.

A warm welcome at Summer Lodge

We arrived via the hotel’s lush gardens, passing a charming croquet lawn along the way — a scene straight out of a classic novel. Once inside, we were warmly greeted and shown to the sitting room. With its soft, oversized armchairs and plush sofas, we felt instantly at home. We settled in beside the fireplace the perfect spot to relax.

Afternoon Tea done right

We all opted for the classic afternoon tea, which offered a mix of savoury and sweet. Two of us chose the vegetarian option, which was equally tempting. A broad selection of teas and coffees was available to accompany the meal, and the staff were more than happy to offer recommendations.

Soon, our tea was brought out — a stunning three-tiered stand filled with an array of beautifully presented treats. The top tier, glistening with colourful sweets, was almost too pretty to eat (almost!).

We began with the sandwiches, which were fresh and full of flavour. Think delicate slices of smoked salmon, ham, cheese, and tangy pickle — each one perfectly balanced and thoughtfully made using local ingredients. The vegetarian option featured equally satisfying alternatives.

Next came the scones, both plain and fruit, served warm with generous dollops of Dorset clotted cream and sweet strawberry jam. The texture was spot-on: crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy inside.

Despite having skipped lunch in anticipation, we were starting to feel satisfyingly full. But the final tier, filled with macaroons, miniature tarts, and rich chocolate cake, was too tempting to resist. Thankfully, our attentive waiter provided a takeaway box, so we didn’t have to leave anything behind.

A stroll to finish

Feeling thoroughly pampered (and a bit indulgent), we wandered out into the gardens for a gentle post-tea stroll. The grounds at Summer Lodge are every bit as elegant as the tea service itself — a perfect end to a truly lovely afternoon.
