Beaminster’s location is ideal for discovering West Dorset, South Somerset and East Devon. There is something for everyone including historic houses and gardens, pretty country villages and family centred attractions such as Monkey World. Because there is so much locally to do we will focus on some of our favourite places we’ve visited ourselves.

A beautiful Jacobean Manor House with award winning garden has been the location for films and TV dramas. With a coach house cafe that hosts events throughout the year.

There is a beach for everyone in West Dorset and here is a selection of some of our favourites


West Bay Bridport DT6 4HE
Closest beach to Blackbird Cottage and forms part of the Jurassic coast. Has a sandy beach and amazing cliffs. Good selection of eateries around the harbour. 20 minute drive from the cottage.


Hive Beach Burton Bradstock, Bridport DT6 4RF
Unspoilt National Trust beach with good car parking, toilets and beach café. Walks along cliffs and beach. 25 minute drive from the cottage.


Seatown Bridport DT6 6JU
Great location for a Sunday morning walk, stroll along the beach then finish off with lunch or a drink at the Anchor Inn. 30 minute drive from the cottage.

Blackbird Cottage has walks and footpaths in all directions from its doorstep and here a a few of our favourites.


Circular walk to Netherbury 3.5 mile footpath along open countryside, woodland and streams. Netherbury was the original location of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage.


Mapperton House 2.4 mile hilly walk along footpath, open fields, and woodland. Look out for the white deer in Parnham Park.


Stoke Abbott 1.8 mile easy walk along a quiet road. Finish off with a drink at the New Inn.
