Why Beaminster is the Perfect Car-Free Holiday Destination
Here is something that surprises almost everyone who visits Beaminster for the first time.
You don’t need a car.
The restaurants, shops, cafés, pubs, walks and evening strolls are all within easy reach on foot. Not even, if you time it right, for the Jurassic Coast.
In a part of England that is‚ let’s be honest‚ not especially well known for its public transport links, Beaminster is a quietly remarkable exception. A beautiful, self-contained market town where everything you need for a genuinely wonderful few days is within a short walk of the front door of Blackbird Cottage.
Park the car on arrival. You won’t need it again until you leave.
For anyone travelling without a car, arriving by train, or simply tired of being the designated driver, this is what Beaminster offers.
Arriving without a car, the train option
Getting to Beaminster by public transport is easier than you might think and considerably more pleasant than two hours on a motorway.
London to Crewkerne by train
Crewkerne is your nearest mainline station, just 10 miles from Beaminster and it sits on the South Western Railway mainline from London Waterloo. The fastest trains from London Waterloo to Crewkerne take just 2 hours and 27 minutes, with up to 20 direct trains per day. The first train departs London Waterloo early in the morning and the last train of the day gets you to Crewkerne well into the evening.
Advance tickets can be remarkably good value and travelling by train means you arrive at Crewkerne relaxed, having read your book or watched the Somerset countryside roll past, rather than fighting your way through the M3.
From Crewkerne to Beaminster
From Crewkerne station, a local taxi to Blackbird Cottage in Beaminster takes approximately 15 minutes. (this should be pre booked with a taxi company) Sue can provide up-to-date taxi recommendations when you book just ask.

The Jurassic Coast without a car
This is where it gets really interesting.
The Jurassic Coast, 95 miles of UNESCO World Heritage coastline, ancient cliffs and fossil-rich beaches, is famously accessible only by car. Or so most people assume.
The x53 Jurassic Coaster Bus
The X53 Jurassic Coaster is one of the great scenic bus journeys in England, running from Weymouth in the east to Axminster in the west via West Bay and Bridport, with unrivalled panoramic views over the spectacular Jurassic coastline throughout.
The route provides direct access to many of Dorset’s most popular coastal attractions, is ideal for walkers exploring the South West Coast Path, and day tickets are available allowing unlimited travel on participating services. English National Concessionary Bus Passes are accepted on eligible journeys.
From Bridport, 7 miles from Beaminster and easily reached by local bus or taxi X53 opens up the entire coast in both directions. Here’s what you can reach:
West Bay, miles from Beaminster Jurassic Coaster stop
The dramatic harbour town and inspiration for TV’s Broadchurch. Golden sandstone cliffs, dog-friendly beaches and several excellent cafés and restaurants on the harbour front.
Burton Bradstock and Hive Beach, 8 miles Jurassic Coaster stop
The celebrated Hive Beach Café and one of the most beautiful stretches of pebble beach on the Jurassic Coast.
Abbotsbury, Jurassic Coaster stop
The famous Abbotsbury Swannery and the extraordinary Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens — 30 acres of Grade I listed woodland valley garden in its own coastal microclimate.
Charmouth and Lyme Regis, Jurassic Coaster stops
Fossil hunting on the beach at Charmouth, the beautiful Georgian harbour town of Lyme Regis and the most famous fossil coastline in England.
From July 2023, the X52 Jurassic Coaster has operated as an open-top bus service between Weymouth, Abbotsbury and Bridport in summer, allowing passengers to enjoy the fresh sea air and the most spectacular coastal views as they travel.
For walkers, the Jurassic Coaster is particularly valuable, it allows you to walk a section of the South West Coast Path one way and take the bus back, without needing to organise a car shuttle. Walk from West Bay to Seatown, take the bus back. Walk from Seatown to Charmouth, take the bus back. The entire Dorset coast, on foot, without a car.
Check current timetables at firstbus.co.uk before you travel, services may vary seasonally.
Day trips without a car
Beyond the immediate town and the Jurassic Coast, several excellent day trips from Beaminster are achievable without a car:
Bridport 7 miles by taxi or local bus
West Dorset’s most creative market town ‚Äî excellent independent shops, the famous twice-weekly market (Wednesday and Saturday) and some of the finest food in the area. Easily reached by local taxi and worth the trip.
Dorchester 20 miles Train from Crewkerne or local bus
The county town of Dorset, Roman history, Thomas Hardy connections, excellent museums and a lovely market. Accessible from Crewkerne station or by local bus via Bridport.
Sherborne 12 miles Taxi or local bus
A beautiful medieval market town with a magnificent Abbey, a ruined castle and stunning Capability Brown parkland. Accessible by taxi from Beaminster.
Walks from the cottage door
One of the greatest pleasures of a car-free stay at Blackbird Cottage is that the walking starts the moment you step outside.
The West Dorset countryside begins almost immediately beyond the market square ‚Äî green lanes, the banks of the River Brit, the ancient woodland of Puckett’s Wood and the ridgeway above Beaminster are all accessible on foot from the cottage door.
Our favourite car-free walks from Blackbird Cottage:
Puckett’s wood, from the door
A lovely ancient Woodland Trust woodland. Spectacular in spring bluebell season, wonderful in every season.
River brit to Netherbury, 3 miles circular
A beautiful walk along the wooded banks of the River Brit south to the village of Netherbury and back. Easy, flat and perfect for all abilities.
Gerrard’s hill, from the door
Head up to the ridgeway for wide views back over Beaminster and the Vale of Marshwood beyond. The town looks extraordinary from above.
Parnham Park, 30 minute walk
A countryside walk to Parnham Park, 140 acres of stunning historic estate and lunch at the Michelin Guide’s own Parnham Park Restaurant. One of our very favourite suggestions for guests staying at the cottage.
A word about taxis
For the moments when you want to go a little further, a late dinner somewhere special, a trip to the coast, collection from Crewkerne station, Beaminster has reliable local taxi services. Sue can provide up-to-date recommendations when you book.
A taxi from Crewkerne station to the cottage takes approximately 15 minutes. A taxi to the Jurassic Coast at Eype or West Bay takes approximately 20 minutes. Between meals, walks and the Jurassic Coaster bus, most guests find they use a taxi only once or twice during a stay and the freedom of not having to think about parking or driving more than makes up for it.
The truth about car-free Beaminster
We would not pretend that Beaminster is somewhere you can visit entirely without a car in the way that a city centre hotel allows. The countryside is rural, the Jurassic Coast is nearby rather than next door and some of the finest experiences West Dorset has to offer require a short journey.
But what Beaminster offers and what very few West Dorset destinations can match, is a genuinely self-sufficient town where the day-to-day pleasures of a holiday are entirely walkable. The restaurants. The shops. The cafés and pubs. The walks. The evening strolls. All of it, on foot, without the car.
And with Crewkerne’s mainline connection to London Waterloo just fifteen minutes away by taxi, arriving without a car is entirely straightforward.
Park the car on arrival. Or don’t bring one at all.
Either way, Blackbird Cottage is ready for you.
